Cheryl Shakespeare (Lees Summit, MO)

Specific Goals for 2007 season:
1)      To get back into racing condition (after having had 4 surgeries in the last 2 years) and do a variety of races this season which include 1-2 marathons, 1-2 half ironman triathlons, a couple of cycling events time trial and/or road race (first time for this), 2-4 olympic and sprint distance triathlons.
2)      My longer term goals (2008/2009 seasons) are to qualify for the Age Group Nationals and the US Half Ironman Championships. I will start building with this goal in mind in the 2007 season.

Your Favorite Event and Why:
My favorite event is Triathlon, in particular the Half Ironman distance. I’ve always loved the variety and challenge that the sport of triathlon provides me.  There is always something new and exciting to work towards and achieve whether it be a more efficient swim, faster transitions, working on flat or hill speed in cycling (my strongest sport is cycling), or greater endurance in my running. I enjoy the enthusiasm and inspiration that I constantly see in other competitors.

The bike I ride is: A 2005 Specialized Allez…here’s a picture isn’t it a beauty?!  I’ve since added aerobars, new tires with red rims, and red handlebar tape.

I’m an interior designer at a large engineering/architectural company in Overland Park, KS. I’m married to Michael, we have 2 kitty cats which are spoiled rotten.  The two best training buddies in the world are my friends Melanie (fellow triathlete), and Bruce (our cycling coach) who both constantly motivate me to train and race my best.  I look forward to becoming a part of the DFT team!!

I started competing in marathons, triathlons and other running events in 2000 when I was 37 years old (yep I’m 44 now)  I took swim lessons in 2000 and was actually afraid of the water (esp. the lake!).  I was never athletically inclined; so it has been a great surprise for everyone especially me that I am doing this now.  Since that time I’ve done 10 marathons and 30 triathlons including 5 Half Ironmans, and 1 Full Ironman (2004).  My strongest seasons were 2003-2004. I had 4 ear surgeries throughout the 2005/2006 seasons which hampered my conditioning along with the fact that the Full Ironman took a lot out of me. Finally I feel that my conditioning is returning and I want to come back stronger than ever.
